MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA — Harry E. Slade, publisher of The Manchester Cricket and president and co-owner of The Cricket Press, Inc., died peacefully last Saturday, July 30, 2011, at his residence at the age of 91.

Born Oct. 2, 1919 in Manchester, he was the son of the late Harry Ellsworth Slade, Sr. and Mary Jane (Fraser) Slade.

Slade graduated from Story High School in Manchester in 1937. He went on to Wentworth Institute in Boston and received a degree in printing in 1939. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country until 1945. After World War II, he joined the family business with his brother Daniel F. Slade and father Harry Slade, Sr.

Harry was an avid tennis player and fan, and for many years, the left-handed Slade was one of Manchester's top tennis players winning Town tournaments in both singles and doubles. Harry had the opportunity to play with tennis professional Don Budge and Dr. Don Manchester, of the Brookline Country Club, when they dedicated the new courts at Sweeney Park.

A standout athlete in high school, Harry also played first base for many years on the Manchester Town Team Baseball Club and in retirement was inducted into the Inter-town Twilight League Hall of Fame. He was also a life-long Red Sox fan.

He was a member of the Amaral-Bailey Post 113 of the American Legion. He was a past-president of The Manchester Club. As a member of the Manchester Elder Brethren, he served on the Executive Board and received the Slade-Eaton Award for Outstanding Community Service. A communicant of Sacred Heart Church, he was a member of the Masconomo Council 1232 Knights of Columbus and was a past-president of the Holy Name Society. Harry also served on the Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Harry will always be remembered as a quiet, humble and hardworking man, devoted to his family, church and community. Dedicated to the family business, which he and his brother grew, Harry worked until just a month before his passing.

Harry was predeceased by his wife, Agnes Rita (Hyland) Slade, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage, and his daughter, Mary Jane (Slade) Stevens. He also leaves behind a son, Dr. Henri Ellsworth Beaufort de Slade, III, of Heidelberg, Germany; a grandson, Samuel N. Stevens of Nantucket; former son-in-law, Phillips Stevens and his wife Deborah Citron-Stevens of Essex. He also leaves behind many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church in Manchester-by-the-Sea on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend. A burial service will follow at the Rosedale Cemetery, Manchester-by-the-Sea. There are no visiting hours.
