Samuel Slade

b. 14 June 1723, d. 1790
Samuel Slade was born on June 14, 1723 in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia.1 He was the son of Joshua Slade and Mary [?]. He was baptized on August 10, 1723 in Charles Parish, Virginia.1 Court order instructing Samuel Slade to pay Elias Love 50 pounds tobacco for serving as witness against Benjamin Brittain.2 Samuel Slade married Mary [?], as indicated in his will; Although a marriage record has never been found, it would have been about 1745-1755, based on the approximate birth years of their sons.3 On March 11, 1762 Samuel and Lewis Joyner appraised the Estate of John Denson in Southampton County, Virginia.4 Samuel appraised the Estate of Hodges Council, Jr. with Giles Joyner and William Joyner as witnesses on September 9, 1762 in Virginia.5
Samuel would have been the right age to have participated in the Revolutionary War, but no evidence has yet been found that he did. Samuel Slade was shown on the 1783 & 1784 tax rolls of Nottoway Parish, Southampton County, Virginia with 155 Acres, taxed at the rate of 7 shillings 7 pence per acre for a total £58.15.5 He lived near Indian Creek and west of the Great Swamp.6
Samuel Slade made his will on November 21, 1789 and it was filed for probate in Southampton County on October 14, 1790, indicating that Samuel died sometime prior to that date.7 Samuel's will named his wife Mary, four sons, Samuel Jr., Joshua, William and Jethro, as well as mentioning 7 younger children who were not named. The un-named children have not been further identified. Therefore, they are not included in the list below of the children of Samuel and Mary. It is possible that the Mary Slade who married Thomas Grizzard on April 2, 1791 in Southampton County, was one of those younger children. Mary Grizzard also appeared in settlement of accounts of Samuel Slade [Jr] in January, 1815. No further evidence confirming this family relationship has been found.

A transcription of Samuel Slade's 1789 will can be seen here.
