WILLIAM SLADE, born in England in the 1690's and a weaver by trade, emigrated to America at the age of 19. He appears for the first time in Lebanon CT, when the " Old Lebanon " indicated that he " owned the covenant " on 24 Mar 1716. Lebanon had been settled in 1695 by land grants from the Colony of Connecticut General Assembly and purchases and cessions from the Pequot Indians.
William Slade was married in Lebanon, Connecticut 1716 to Thankful Hutchinson, where sons Samuel, William and Aaron were born. The family later resided in Hebron and Windsor, CT. Their seven children were: Samuel b 1717, William b 1719, Aaron b 1721, Mary b 1724; John b 1727; James b 1730; and Hannah b 1735. Son John removed to Alstead, New Hampshire in 1773 where several generations were raised.
Immigrant William’s great-grandson William Slade b 1786 was elected to Congress from Vermont in 1831 and Governor of Vermont in 1844. Dana and Ira Slade went to Detroit, MI in 1851 and opened Slade Brothers business until 1856 when Dana removed to Keokuk, Iowa. After the Civil War Dana removed to Chicago where he remained until his death. The majority of descendants of the immigrant William were living in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont as late as 1910.
This family genealogy is well documented in the book: William Slade of Windsor Connecticut And His Descendants by Thomas Bellows Peck, published 1910 by Sentinel Printing Company, Keene, N.H.
