Calvin Griffin Slade

b. 30 November 1854, d. 14 October 1924
     Calvin Griffin Slade was born on November 30, 1854 in Marion County, Mississippi.1,2 He was the son of Hezekiah Slade and Helena Victoria Taylor.
     Calvin married Harriet Matilda Fillingame, daughter of Austin Fillingame and Mary Jane Anderson, on August 7, 1873.1 Calvin was a farmer and bought land in the Okahola community near Purvis, where he settled and raised his family. He would take a team of oxen on a wagon train to the Gulf Coast for supplies. The round trip journey would take about two weeks. Calvin was a member of the old Central Baptist Church, near his home place. The young folk would come to his house on Sundays, play the organ and sing gospel songs.1 Calvin Griffin Slade died on October 14, 1924 at age 692 and was buried in Boone Cemetery, Lamar County, Mississippi.3,2
